My Rebellious Slave

06/08/09 09:29, by , Categories: Stray Thoughts, Living Life
Ok, confession time here. I have been keeping a slave. Unfortunately, I have not been keeping him very well. In fact, I don't think he feels much like a slave at all, since I have been so lax with him. If he were my child, I would be failing as a parent. But he's not my child, he's my slave, at least he's supposed to be. He likes to stay up late, and no matter how many times both I and Sarah have told him not to, he continues to, and then he is tired and impatient with all of us the next day. He also needs to lose some weight and eat better. I've really been getting after him for that, but I need to put my foot down and make him. I guess sometimes I just get too soft with him. He does work hard and so then I feel like he ought to enjoy himself and get to eat the food he wants and stay up late watching CSI:NY or playing BookWorm or BeJeweled2. But I need to stop indulging him and start making him mind. I mean, he is my slave and he needs to start acting like it. I'm tired of him telling me what he will and will not do and demanding that I indulge his wants and wishes. I really hate to though, but I'm really going to work on it. "but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified." (1 Corinthians 9:27)

Falling Asleep on the Ride Home

06/06/09 17:09, by , Categories: Family, Stray Thoughts
As we came home from the work day today, both of the boys fell asleep on the van. When we got home I carried them inside and put them in their beds. It got me thinking. They fell asleep riding in the van, but when they woke up, they were home. We are all on the trip home. Some of us, perhaps all of us, will "fall asleep" before we get there, but suddenly, we will be home. "we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye." (no, I don't believe in soul sleep, so the metaphor is imperfect. :) )

Don't Miss This- Dad's!!

Came across this article today and had to post it. It reports research that shows just how important it is for dads to be, not only present, but involved closely with the family. It mentions that it matters how much the father knows about what is going on in the kids life when the kid is away from home. It mentions how important it is for the family to do things together as a family (not just doing the same thing at the same time). It mentions the overall beneficial role of dads that is not duplicated by moms. I find it interesting that it shows that this benefit is in traditional families. No mention of the fact that if its a lesbian couple, you don't have a dad. No mention of the trend towards weakening this standard societal unit of traditional family. Just a lot of data on how beneficial it is for children to have close, loving parents made of a mom and a dad. Read the article and enjoy. Looks like God may have gotten it right again.

Catch Up Friday

06/05/09 14:08, by , Categories: Family, LOST, Living Life
Missed writing yesterday as I ended up taking the day off for the most part. My parents came to help us celebrate #2's fourth bday. It was a great afternoon and good to spend time with my folks. Fortunately I had a very productive day on Wednesday and got my radio shows all written and recorded and all my stuff to Beth for the week. Today is the day to tie up other loose ends. Got to run into the radio station and drop of a CD, pick up some things at the store for Sarah and take care of some other office details. Tomorrow is a work day at Berea so I expect to be down there a good part of the day. Come down and join us if you are in the area. So I read an article that says that Claire will be back and a main character next season on LOST. No other details were given. I am working on developing a better prayer information network. We need a way to post updates in between the prayer chain work. Well, many more things to do.

Sing for Your Mind

  06/03/09 08:13, by , Categories: Living Life
Great article this morning from CNN that discusses what researchers and medical practitioners are learning about the effect of music. Listening and performing it actually help create more and complex brain pathways. No wonder God is always urging us to sing and make music to Him. He created us for music and made music good for us. Now while I don't think this endorses any particular cultural style of music ("traditional" vs. "contemporary"), I do think that music needs to have an order to it in terms of meter, beat, and melody. The style can be fast or slow, but I imagine that chaotic and cacophonous music might not be what the brain ordered. Just my opinion. Sing to the Lord today, with gladness! :)
